Happy Valentine’s Day!

A day singles loathe and couples gush.

What do you do to show love for yourself?

There is a tendency for singles to hate Valentine’s Day and couples to have a love/hate relationship with it depending on their own relationship. When we think of Valentine’s Day we think of red hearts, red roses, red wine, candles.

We imagine couples dancing and romancing while the lonely hearts are sitting at the bar drinking away their sorrows. Why is this when we are in a world constantly being told to love ourselves first. Once we like who we are we can begin to be authentic and share our love for others in a better way. Our happiness will just spill out of us.

Make Valentine’s Day Your Day

Honour yourself. Be kind. Be authentic. Do something special to recognize the wonderful person that you are.

We have all been through struggles. We’ve lost people, been sick, struggled with work. We have experienced sadness and consequences but we have made it through. Through the lowest of the lows we have picked ourselves up, dusted off, and moved on with our lives.

Sometimes we get through it on our own and sometimes we need someone to lean on; a parent, friend, teacher…

For Now – Join me in a little exercise:

Find a Quiet Space

Find yourself a quiet space. A space where you can sit in peace. Perhaps when the kids are napping, while relaxing in the tub, or even on a work break. Do your best to set aside 20-30 minutes to really be alone with no distractions.

Clear Your Head

Once you have found that space take a few deep breaths. Close your eyes if it feels comfortable to you. Breathe again. Think about placing all thoughts and worries on a shelf. They will be there for you once this time is over. Right now think only of the stillness around you. Be calm and relaxed.

Think of a Happy Memory

Focus on a time that you were truly happy; it could have been earlier today or when you were 5 years old. A time when life seemed easy and things were just going your way. When you were happy and confident in who you were and the life you built around you.

Go Deeper

Once you have that scenario in mind, consider why that memory is one of your happiest. Pick out one or two things about your personality or beliefs that made that moment even more significant. What were those things?

Reflection

Begin to consider if you use these qualities or beliefs to empower your daily life now. What made them significant then? What is important to you now? How can you use/bring these reflections into your daily life?

Show Love For Yourself

You have slowed down and looked within. Celebrate any learning that you have found in the process. This process will become even more powerful if you choose to do it on a regular basis.

If you do, you will find that you:

  • Become more confident
  • Spread happiness
  • Honour yourself
  • Find your importance

Whether coupled up or not on Valentine’s Day it is important to LOVE YOURSELF. You will be amazed by the personal growth you will experience when you are happy with who you are and invested in who you will become.

Celebrate You by Doing Something Meaningful to Your Emotional/Physical/Spiritual Health. Possible ideas: a bubble bath, an evening out, family storytime, etc.
